It was Ford’s Tony Reinhart, South Central Regional Governmental Affairs Manager who has handed over the keys of the E85 Escape Hybrid to Greensburg’s Mayor John Jansen. Aside from the hybrid vehicle, the members of the Ford-UAW Local 249 have also donated $5,600.

Last May 4, Greensburg was nearly destroyed by an F5 tornado killing 12 people and ruining nearly 95 percent of its infrastructures both residential and commercial. And today, Greensburg is developing plans to rebuild itself as an environmental model community that would have renewable power and energy-efficient buildings.

Tony Reinhart said “This is a win-win for both Ford and Greensburg because the use of the E85 Escape Hybrid will allow the town’s municipality to utilize an environmentally-friendly vehicle as it works toward rebuilding the city. At the same time we gain insight into the technology as it is used under day-to-day driving conditions.”

Mayor John Jansen of Greensburg has also said, “We are excited that Ford is including us in its demonstration of E85 Escape Hybrids. This opportunity fits in with our green vision to rebuild Greensburg to a more environmentally-friendly and sustainable community.”

There would be a total of 20 Ford E85 Escape Hybrids that are to be delivered to selected fleet customers in six states supporting the automaker’s claim to another important industry’s first. The E85 Escape Hybrid is the world’s first vehicle that is capable of operating on a mixture of fuel containing as much as 85 percent ethanol.

Ethanol is the renewable fuel that can be produced from American-grown corn. Ford’s Escape Hybrid produces around 25 percent lesser greenhouse gas emissions as compared to gasoline-fueled Escape Hybrid. Plus it runs completely on renewable fuel which can help in reducing the nation’s reliance on imported oil.

There are already six million flexible fuel vehicles now running on America’s highways and if all of them would run on E85, a total of 3.6 billion gallons of gasoline could be saved a year. Ford has also committed itself that half of its annual vehicle production are to run on alternative fuels.

One of the difficult challenges in promoting vehicles that runs on renewable fuel is the availability of bioethanol fueling stations since less than 1 percent of the 170,000 retail gas stations in the country offer E85 ethanol. And if the government is really sincere in its eco protection programs then it should help in expanding the availability of E85 since automakers just cannot do it alone.

General Motors Corp. joined other sponsors that are pulling ads from the “Imus in the Morning” program following last week’s controversial comments of the jock about African Americans as well as female college athletes.

One would think high school students might be a bit old for toys at Christmas time. But for a select group of Plymouth North High School, toys have been one of their primary focuses with the recent launching of a toy drive for underprivileged children in November. This effort earned this group of students the Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac Driven Student of the Month award.

The group of students, comprised of members of a student advisory group, initiated the campaign on November 10. Placing boxes strategically throughout the school, the group encouraged fellow students and teachers to donate new toys. After December 11, the toys will then be donated to Salvation Army, the Plymouth Fire Department and some local churches for distribution.

âIn this season of giving, there are so many heartwarming stories of people sharing with those less fortunate. This is definitely one of them,â said Margaret Foley, one of the advisory group teachers. âWhat makes me most proud of this group of students is that they came up with this idea on their own and sought out the Salvation Army, the Fire Department and other groups that could use this kind of donation.â

For their good deeds, the students were treated to a pizza party, courtesy of Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac. Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac President Jeff Tracy and Sales Manager David Gavin delivered the pizzas and drink koozies as a gift for those attending.

The nameplate mounted on the van’s dashboard reads “Noah’s van”. Frank and the Mobility Specialists at Liberty Motor Company have similar plates made for each child who receives a wheelchair accessible van. Run by the Central Highland Association of the Disabled, Justin needed the CHAD bus for transportation to and from medical treatments; however, the CHAD buses were simply too expensive and time-consuming.

“It costs $200 to go on the CHAD bus every time we have to visit the IWK Hospital in Halifax and it must be scheduled well in advance”, notes Roxanne.

The Frustrating Hunt for a Handicap Minivan

In 2008, Roxanne was granted $20,000 from President’s Choice Children’s Charity to help purchase a wheelchair accessible van, but her location made it almost impossible to test drive or purchase an accessible handicap minivan. After many difficult experiences using a side-entry van, Roxanne knew she needed better options. Through her research into local dealerships that sold unmodified vans, Roxanne discovered the cost of converting a van with a ramp was costly.

At just the right time, Roxanne met Lisa Conway. Lisa had just recently been through the process of purchasing a handicap accessible minivan. The two women became good friends when Lisa offered to give Roxanne and Justin a ride to a Halloween party at the local YMCA. To meet Roxanne’s budget, Dave worked with the family’s social worker and the funding coordinator for the IWK Health Centre, Lisa Scott. Between the four of them, they were able to work out a price that Roxanne could afford. The IWK then raised $5,380 in donations. Along with donations from family and friends, Roxanne had enough to supplement her grant.

Independence Made Easy with a Wheelchair Accessible Van

Roxanne and Justin were overjoyed when their silver 2004 rear-entry Dodge Grand Caravan arrived home in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on January 26th, 2009.

“When Justin got in all by himself, I stood in the yard with my neighbour and cried tears of joy. It was the first time in a long time that I felt independent to be able to do the things we both wanted and needed to do together.”

On their very first trip in the modified van, Roxanne and Justin invited his cousin, Kane, to come along.

“It was the first time they’d ever been able to go anywhere together. It was an amazing feeling for them to sit together and pop a movie into the DVD player! We never heard a peep out of either of them”, recalls Roxanne.

The children’s enthusiasm continued when they arrived at the store.

“It was the first time for Justin and he was going up and down the aisles, picking things off the shelves by the armful! Before that van, I would go by myself and ask if he wanted anything. Now, he can go with me!”

Peace of Mind with a Rear-Entry Wheelchair Accessible Van

The wheelchair accessible van has given the family the independence they desired and Roxanne has gained peace of mind as a parent. Justin faced many challenges at school before his wheelchair van conversion. Justin’s illness caused him to have bladder and bowel problems and so he had to be catheterized each day at noon. When his school ended the lunch time bus, Roxanne had no simple way to transport Justin home for the necessary treatment. “Justin is very outgoing, and he’s non-stop now! For the first time in our lives, I’m not dependent on someone else to stay with him while I run errands or asking someone to pick up things for us. A lot of the fear is gone and our independence is back. We’re doing everything that other people take for granted. Our van has given us so much liberty!”

Unfortunately you can’t sort these with other types of glass for recycling. Most states do not have special requirements for the disposal of regular household mercury-containing flourescent or incandescent light bulbs. To keep more light bulbs from ending up in landfills, buy a compact flourescent (CFL) bulb; it lasts for years longer than regular incandescent bulbs. Makeup

You should only keep concealer, lipstick, eye and lip liners, fragrances, powders, blushes, and shadows for a year and a half to two years. But there are still ways to practice sustainable beauty. They can be made into fiberfill for winter coats, sleeping bags, life jackets, bean bags, rope, tennis ball felt, combs, cassette tapes, boat sails, furniture, and of course, other plastic bottles.
Plastics 2

High-density polyethylene plastics (HDPE), commonly found in heavier containers that hold laundry detergents and bleaches as well as milk, shampoo, and motor oil are readily accepted by curbside recycling programs. They can be made into toys, piping, lumber, and rope.

Polystyrene (Styrofoam), commonly found in coffee cups, disposable cutlery, meat trays, packing peanuts, and insulation are widely accepted by curbside recycling programs. You can also take Styrofoam or packing peanuts that are clean and in good condition to any UPS Store or Mail Boxes Etc. for recycling.
Plastics 7

Mixed or layered plastics have virtually no recycling potential. These are usually imprinted with a number 7 or nothing at all. Ambitious consumers can feel free to return such items to the product manufacturers to avoid contributing to local waste. Do you have broken things in your home? If you can, fix it. But if you just can’t fix it–or don’t want to pay to have it fixed–here are four smart things you can do instead of sending it to the landfill.

First, try to recycle it. The best place to learn about recycling is to call whatever company picks up your trash. If you’re rural and must take trash and recycling to a landfill, transfer station, or recycle center, contact the company to find out what it can use and what it can’t, and whether there is a charge.

For example, many communities have curbside pickup for trash and recycling. The recycled things may be collected in a single bin or need to be sorted by type: metals, plastics, papers, and yard waste. Some communities have curbside recycling for small and major appliances while others don’t. And in some towns, there are private recyclers that will pick up just about any recyclable materials you put at the curb on a specified day.

Most major appliances are about 75 percent steel–and about a third of that is recycled steel. Other metals in appliances include copper, aluminum, and zinc, all recyclable. Refrigerators, freezers, ranges, ovens, cook tops, clothes washers, dryers, dishwashers, dehumidifiers, room air conditioners, trash compactors are all potentially recyclable.

You also can find local recyclers in your local telephone book under headings like Recycle Centers and Scrap Metals. Many will pay you for aluminum cans, clear glass, PET plastics, and nonferrous (non-iron) metals. PET stands for poly ethylene terephthalate, a plastic resin used in many products–and easily recycled into new products.

Second, try reusing it. There are many things around your home that you can reuse instead of recycling or tossing. Think creatively before you banish something from your household. For example:

* Unrepairable clothing can become fix-it shop rags or quilting squares.

* Broken or discarded kitchen cabinets can be used as work cabinets in your fix-it shop.

* Extra drawers from a broken dresser can become under-bed storage containers.

* Ugly but usable hairdryers can be put to work thawing frozen pipes or making small patches of paint dry faster.

* Old tires can be nailed to walls in tight garages to reduce car scrapes or used in the yard as landscaping material or as play equipment.

* Polystyrene packing (peanuts) and other packing materials can be used to pack around breakable gifts or any package you need to mail or ship.

Third, if it’s still in usable condition, give it to someone who can use it:

* You can donate old eyeglasses to your local Lions Club.

* A few charities and service organizations accept operating computers and appliances.

* Turn in old cell phones to your phone provider if they offer reconditioned phones to groups that help homeless and/or low-income people to be used for emergency-only calls.

* Local charities may also accept diskettes, video tapes, polystyrene packing, compact discs, and holiday greeting cards.

* A senior center or homeless shelter may appreciate your old books and magazines.

* Packing peanuts and other packing materials are appreciated by your local mailbox/shipping store.

* Animal shelters gladly take donations of clean blankets and towels for use as pet beds.

Also, you can take broken things to repair shops. For example, small appliance repair shops may accept nonworking items and reuse the parts. Or they may refurbish and resell items. Most won’t pay you anything for the broken things–there’s just not enough profit in it–but they may bring it back to working condition and save someone some money. And you won’t have to pay to put it in the landfill.

Finally, if you learn to enjoy fixing things, donate something that breaks to your education. Put broken stuff on your workbench for a rainy day and disassemble it to figure out how it works. You may even be able to salvage and reuse an otherwise good motor, heat element, or switches. You can fix it!

Eden Prairie, Minnesota (December 3, 2008) – Hedy Margolis, Center Manager for the Rocky Mountain USO at Denver International Airport, has announced the acquisition of a new motorized cart to provide transportation for wounded soldiers returning to the U.S. via the Denver airport.

The vehicle was purchased from funds raised at one of the national conferences held by FranChoice as part of a teambuilding event to connect franchise consultants with representatives from over 60 national franchise concepts. Twenty Apple iPods and iTunes cards were also donated to the USO. “It was an amazing event,” said Kiser-Bock. “The conference attendees connected with the project on a personal level and the cards they created were both touching and meaningful.”

Tom McKenzie donates $20,000 worth of Vintage Motorcycles to the help the children of Haiti.

New Orleans, La – Tom McKenzie a member of the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group has recently donated four classic motorcycles to the Bernard Vehicle Foundation to be put up for auction with all proceeds going to assist the Children of Haiti.

The motorcycles are value at approximately $20,000 and were put forward as a challenge to other cyclists in support of the People in Haiti. This generous donation was design to benefit the children charities of Haiti.

Honda Donates $1m to Dso

Musical and generous. That is what Honda Motor Co. radiated when it donated $1 million to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The donation will allow more children to participate in the youth training program of DSO.

The second largest Japanese car maker’s first major gift to DSO is by far the most sizeable thing it has given to an American arts organization. The donation will be used to fund the Power of Dreams String Project, which will provide introductory music education and string training in Metro Detroit communities where opportunities for children are nonexistent or families could not afford the instruments or lessons, according to the Detroit News.

The Honda grant is expected to add 200 beginning string players to DSO classical training programs, which now include about 450 young musicians in five ensembles, the report continued. The grant, which will be divided in equal installments over the next five years, is also aimed to pay for private string lessons for 20 children in grades three through six.

What’s more, the grant sets seed money for a Power of Dreams Music Education Fund. DSO solicits public contributions for such fund.

“This is exactly the kind of partnership we’ve been looking for to assure the stability of these vital programs long-term,” said DSO president and executive director Anne Parsons. “While we are very proud of our educational programs, it’s a struggle every year to raise the considerable amount of money needed to keep them going.”

They “have long been among our major corporate donors” to the DSO’s annual fund drive, which in fiscal 2007 generated $3.5 million for all corporate sponsors combined, said DSO press director Jill Woodward. That is nearly a quarter of the orchestra’s record total of $14.6 million for the year. “Certainly in the corporate category, the Big Three have a long history of giving. The Max wouldn’t be here without them,” she added.

Honda giving considerable donations in America signals its desire to increase its presence in the territory. This could be the result of the intensifying pressure among the Big 3.

The designation of Honda’s large DSO gift for training children reflects the company’s philanthropic emphasis on both youth and education, said Gary Kessler, the senior vice president for human resources at American Honda Corp. “We’re mindful of the benefits to a child from music education,” he said.

“Research shows the relationship between musical studies and personal discipline and effectiveness in all areas of learning. We want to make a difference in lives, and we’re excited about a synergy between Honda and the DSO’s excellent educational programs.”

Leonard Slatkin, the DSO’s music director designate, said that he expects Honda’s collaboration with the DSO to provide “musical opportunities that will make an impact on our young people. The innovative quality of Detroit’s initiatives, and my ability to lead in this area, is one of the things that attracted me to the DSO. Together we will be leaders in the field.”

The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) has already opened its doors and in connection with the opening ceremonies, Toyota showed its concern for the American soldiers who have fought in wars and places of chaos around the world.
